Limn Magazine, Issue 11: The Obsolescence Issue, 2024
In this essay, Dela Anyah examines the material and social life of discarded tires within vulcanizer and mechanic spaces in Accra, positioning these sites as critical environments where questions of waste, value, repair, and environmental responsibility intersect. Through a combination of visual documentation and reflective writing, the article explores how informal repair economies shape the afterlives of industrial materials and reveal alternative systems of value formation.
Published as part of Limn Magazine’s Obsolescence Issue, which brings together artists and scholars to reconsider the cultural and environmental meanings of outdated materials and technologies, the text contributes to broader discussions on sustainability, circular economies, and the politics of disposal.
This publication reflects Anyah’s ongoing research into repair cultures, material transformation, and the ecological implications of mobility infrastructures, situating his artistic practice within contemporary conversations across art, environmental humanities, and material culture studies.
