Artist Statement

Day after day, hundreds of drivers and cyclists visit numerous repair shops across Ghana to service or replace their tires and inner tubes. Unfortunately, these shops often become dumping grounds for discarded tire waste, as old tires are left behind. Vulcanizers are then burdened with disposing of this waste, often resorting to burning or allowing it to accumulate, posing environmental concerns. Many view these materials as worthless once they've fulfilled their original purpose and are damaged. However, I see potential for new life in these seemingly valueless objects, akin to the concept of rebirth.

My work involves deconstructing and reconstructing these discarded objects to shed light on their industrial histories, materiality, cultural relevance, and their impact on climate change.
