“What’s the time?” I muttered to myself, as I tossed my pillow and frantically groped my bed in search of my phone. The moonlight filtered through my windows. I flipped my bedcover and fumbled the mattress beneath it. Then I found my phone. The time was 5:12am. The sky, however, was still murky and as I sat up on my bed to reflect on the weird dream that had woken me up, I felt a thousand goosebumps crawling up my skin. It was a dream like no other, filled with a lot of perturbing symbols that I only understood as I began to document it.

This was my dream.

I found myself standing all alone in my bedroom near my study desk. My room was gloomy but illuminated by a streak of light that peered through a narrow space underneath a door adjacent to me. It was the door that led to my bathroom. As I stared at this door, I sensed the presence of another person behind it. My heart skipped a beat. The atmosphere in my room gradually began to feel heavy. Goosebumps steadily crawled up my skin and at the culmination of this heaviness, a jolt went down my spine and I was immediately immobilised by fear. I could sense death coming, and upon realising that I had nothing to defend myself with, I began to flicker my light switches.

Nothing worked! My light switches were broken when I needed them most. But I didn’t give up. I flickered them even more aggressively till all of a sudden, my door flung open. The light from behind the door instantly pervaded my room. I stiffened, and my heart missed another beat. Suddenly an enigmatic-looking being stormed my bedroom and darted in my direction with a bizarre unnatural speed. This being didn’t have a definite form. All I saw was a few luminous streaks that formed an outline around its transparent body. It spewed great evil. It picked me up and pinned me against my wall. My feet dangled helplessly above the floor as I tried to loosen its grip on my shirt. Then it’s hands steadily began to take on a new form. I saw two huge metallic gloves similar to the ones worn by Knights from the Medieval ages. It gripped me by my crotch. Then I began to feel breathless.

“Je..Je..Jesu!” I tried to scream out the name Jesus but I couldn’t. Suddenly, I found myself lying on my bed. I was still asleep but conscious. I tried to wake up but I couldn’t. I felt as though I had being held down by something or someone that was invisible to me. I tried to scream even more but I couldn’t. Then, my eyes were opened to see two baseball jerseys fast approaching me. I couldn’t see any faces, arms or legs. All I saw were floating jerseys. At that point, I tried even harder to scream out loud but I still couldn’t. I tried to force myself up but whatever it was that had held me down was way stronger than I was.

Then with one final attempt, I uttered the words, JESUS! JESUS SAVE ME! Immediately the baseball jerseys—which were now about a metre away from me—disappeared into thin air and I woke up. Upon waking up, I felt a tingling sensation all over my body. I sat up on my bed and continued repeating His name, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. Then I heard these words, “I will never leave you nor forsake you (see Deuteronomy 31:6, 8)” then “Call unto me and I will answer you” (See Jeremiah 33:3). Thereafter I began to search for my phone.

The meaning of the dream

After I woke up, I tried hard not to think about my dream— thoughts about it sent more shivers down my spine—but I couldn’t. At first it seemed like a “regular” nightmare, but after the Spirit led me to document it, I realised that it wasn’t all about me. And that’s when my dream began to make sense to me.

Its meaning:

We are all on a journey into the unknown: a long crooked path called life filled with a myriad detours and pathways. In the dream I found myself at a crossroad, torn between a lot of life-changing decisions. My dream was staged at a period in time when I was living in darkness, in fear. In my dream, I felt unsafe, very insecure and in no control of my life: my room. I was in a box—living in bondage—and I had nowhere to run or hide when the enemy decided to finally destroy me. I was hopeless.

When I sensed my end drawing near, I applied the most logical solutions to my problem, but they greatly failed me. And when they did, the personality enforcing my bondage—after sensing that my eyes had been open to realise my predicament—came into my life to finally destroy me.

Many times when we are walking or living in darkness, according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air; our greatest or final enemy, the strong man, the force behind the sins we indulge in, is tasked with keeping us from heading towards the true light. He masquerades as the light and negates its attributes in an attempt to keep us away from the true light. In our desperation, we resolve to futile solutions in the hopes that they will one day get us out of the kingdom of darkness; in this process, however, we either get deeply entangled with the evil one like never before—we become greatly possessed/live darker lives—or are killed.

In my dream, he stood behind a door that led to a little corridor that was adjacent to my bathroom. My bathroom here was a symbol of a place where I could receive cleansing and salvation from my sins. For many, this will be a physical church building or temple. In my dream, I could see the path to my deliverance, I could see the light, but I had doubts about walking through that door because of the personality that stood behind it.

Many people, like Moses, see their promise land but are never able to enter because of the fear and doubt the enemy has placed within them. We need to understand that, we can easily convince ourselves with various excuses based on fear, trust issues or pride, why we shouldn’t reach out for help or cleansing, or why we should settle on worldly solutions. At a point in time, I couldn’t bring myself to trust an old pastor friend of my family, because I thought he would tell my parents any and everything I shared with him in confidence (about my addiction to pornography). The very next day, the spirit of lust, who used those doubtful thoughts as a way from keeping me from gaining freedom, greatly overpowered me when I went back to using my old ineffective strategies—turning off my phone and deleting x-rated videos. There is always a higher level or manifestation of darkness; and as long as we lose hope every time the evil one attacks us, as long as we have something in common with him, he can elevate us and make us more evil, perverted and darker than we were before we attempted to flee from his kingdom. One’s level of darkness sometimes goes to show the number of times they have tried to leave the kingdom of darkness using worldly solutions and have failed.

One thing the devil knows, that many people in this world do not know is that, all the worldly solutions he provides us with as we try to leave his kingdom, were designed to numb our innate desire to be with God. God is Love (See 1 John 4:8). He is the one we are looking for. He is the one our spirits yearn for and therefore to keep us away from God and locked up in the kingdom of darkness, the enemy must steal [from], kill and destroy us (See John 10:10) or those around us to keep us walking in hatred (towards man or God); which is in actually sense the emotion or spirit he needs within us to control us.

He knows that his devices are no match for the power in God’s Grace which is only given through Christ Jesus. He knows Jesus and knows that only He, and at the mention of His name for salvation will every knee of pornography, witchcraft, adultery, drunkenness, sickness and every evil act that greatly displeases God, bow and give way.

Who is Jesus? He is the Son of God and all authority in Heaven and on earth belongs to Him. At the mention of His great and mighty name, no demon or power has the right to function or to do its bidding. It was through Him and for Him that all things were created (See Colossians 1:16) and through Him that all things which are not in accordance with the will of God the Father will be destroyed (See Revelation 20). He is the God who is mighty to save us, He is Jesus, He is the same God who has reserved a sect of the powers against us in everlasting chains awaiting judgement (See Jude 1:6).

The two demons in the baseball jerseys were a symbol of death (approaching). Let me explain. In baseball, a strikeout occurs when a batter accumulates three strikes—is unable to hit the ball thrown at him and for other reasons, three times—and for that reason is kicked out of the game. I saw two jerseys which meant I already had two strikes, and at the final strike, my life would be taken away from me. This is where many people are right now, deep in the world of the occult, pornography, greed, drugs, sickness and so on. They are immensely deep and entangled with the evil one: at the point where they feel they can’t run to the “bathroom” because the strongman is guarding the door to what they feel is the only way out. They have been abused, threatened, beaten and warned never to tell a soul about their struggles. Some of them are suicidal. Some are in church but have never heard about Jesus and they know nothing about His name and the authority He has made available to us through His name as long as we believe (See Acts 3:6, Acts 2:38, John 14:13-14, Mark 16:17-18, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11). His word holds true and as long as we believe, He will do exactly what He says in His word: “call unto me and I will answer…” (See Jeremiah 33:3).

God bless you.

Discussion guide

  1. Have you ever experienced a strange night occurrence that kept you up throughout the night or really perturbed well into the day?
  2. In Ephesians 6:12-18, Paul said, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” Which of these weapons do you think the Lord inspired Delasi to use in battling against the forces that attacked him at night?
  3. What do you understand by: “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11).”
