Petrol on fire (One piece of advise)

When many guys are heartbroken or when they are burdened with thoughts about a girl they feel they are in love with, they tend to solicit advise from other friends: friends who have either been through their circumstances, or who seem wise enough to give good counsel.

An example of this can be found in 2 Samuel 13. The case of Amnon and Jonadab, or rather Amnon and Tamar.

In this story we are told that, \”Amnon the son of David loved her [Tamar]. And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.\”

Amnon like many of us can discern right from wrong, and all he, like many of us guys needed was one piece of advise to break down all his defenses. He was probably at the lowest ebb in his life, (See 2 Samuel 13:2) the perfect moment to be deceived by the evil one.

As Amnon poured his heart out to Jonadab, Jonadab said, \”Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.\”

This advise which shuttered Amnon defences, led him to rape his sister which he utterly regretted (2 Samuel 13:14-15). It also led to his death under the hand of Absalom and his men a couple of years later (2 Samuel 13:29).

ONE PIECE OF ADVISE which was given and acted upon during a heartbreaking or emotionally stressful period led to shame, death and the near division of a kingdom (it turned Absalom against his father King David).
